Alex Westfall printed her first photograph in the darkroom at the age of 11. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she is an artist, director, and writer in constant pursuit of new ways of seeing. Her film, writing, and photography work has been supported by the Criterion Collection, British Film Institute, Kino Lorber, Points North Institute, Gotham Film & Media Institute, Yaddo, the Penland School of Craft, and more. A teaching artist at Las Fotos Project, Westfall has also held positions as archival researcher on various film projects, most recently on 2024's Nickel Boys. She holds a B.A. in modern culture and media from Brown University.
At MacDowell, Westfall revised the script and plan for her debut feature film, a hybrid documentary about a fictional photographer. She also worked in the darkroom to make photographs by her protagonist.
