Alexandra Lange is a design critic, historian, and author, most recently, of Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall (Bloomsbury, 2022). She is a contributing editor at Bloomberg CityLab and the former architecture critic for Curbed. Her essays, reviews and features have appeared in The Atlantic, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, New York Magazine, the New York Times, and the New Yorker. Lange was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard GSD in 2014, and received the BRIO Prize and the Stephen A. Kliment Oculus Award from AIA New York in 2020.

While at MacDowell, she worked on her fifth book, Making Do, about the 1970s, the built environment, and DIY culture.

Mansfield

Alexandra Lange worked in the Mansfield studio.

The Helen Coolidge Mansfield Studio was donated by graduates of the Mansfield War Service Classes for Reconstruction Aides. Helen Mansfield helped found the New York MacDowell Club. The small, shingled frame structure with stone foundation was originally fronted on the west side by a neat white picket fence and gate, a garden, and a stone pathway…
