Brendan Mathews is the author of The World of Tomorrow and This Is Not a Love Song, both published by Little, Brown. The World of Tomorrow was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and named an Honor Book by the Massachusetts Book Awards and an Editors' Choice by the New York Times Book Review. This Is Not a Love Song was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. His fiction has twice appeared in The Best American Short Stories; three other stories were named BASS Distinguished Stories. His essays and interviews have been published on Literary Hub, Electric Literature, Salon, and elsewhere. A Fulbright Scholar to Ireland, he has also received support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Sustainable Arts Foundation, and the Sewanee Writers Conference.

At MacDowell, Mathews worked on his novel in progress about a 19th century mind-reader hired to investigate a medium at a Spiritualist community in upstate New York.
