Christopher Alan Schmitz‘s solo, chamber, and ensemble compositions have been described as “superbly orchestrated” (Pizzicato), “sublimely gorgeous” (Fanfare), and “pensive... hard-driving... and whimsical” (American Record Guide). Schmitz’s most recent album features the London Symphony Orchestra performing his Symphony No. 1 and Violin Concerto for Navona records (May 2024). He was named a 2025 National Finalist for the American Prize in Orchestral Composition, professional division, for the work.

While at MacDowell, Schmitz began working on a new chamber music composition to be premiered by the Ehnes String Quartet as part of the 2026 Fabian Concert Series in Macon, GA.

Chapman

Christopher Schmitz worked in the Chapman studio.

Chapman Studio was funded by Mrs. Alice Woodrough Chapman in memory of her husband, composer George Alexander Chapman. Symmetrically massed, the building is stuccoed on the exterior with a natural, unpainted cement. Its unusual half-timbered ornament consists of slender, knotty spruce poles painted a dark green color. A central, peak-roofed entrance porch appears on the north side…
