Darrel Alejandro Holnes is an Afro-Panamanian American poet, playwright, and filmmaker. He is the author of Stepmotherland (University of Notre Dame Press) and Migrant Psalms (Northwestern University Press). His work has appeared in The Atlantic, Poetry Magazine, American Poetry Review, and AGNI, among others. He has received the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize, the Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize, the Juan Felipe Herrera Best Poetry Book Award from the International Latino Book Awards, the C.P. Cavafy Poetry Prize from Poetry International, the Theodore Morrison Fellowship from Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the Catalyst Fellowship from the Dramatists Guild Foundation, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry, and the Anthem Award from The Webbys. He was an I Am Soul Playwright-in-Residence at National Black Theatre, a Lincoln Center Directors Lab alum, an Interstate 73 playwright, a member of the R&D Group by The Civilians, and part of The Playwright Entrepreneur Program at PlayPenn. He founded the Candela Playwrights Summer Fellowship and is Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Executive Director of the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College, CUNY; he also teaches at NYU's Gallatin School.
