David Shanks is an assistant professor at Syracuse University's School of Architecture and a registered architect in the state of New York. At the MacDowell, David conducted research for his article "Who, Mies? Interrogating the Federal Center Courthouse and the Trial of the Chicago Seven" which was subsequently published in the Journal of Architectural Education, vol. 37:1 Atmospheres.

David Shanks worked in the Cheney studio.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
