Ella Hickson is an award-winning writer whose work has been performed throughout the UK and abroad. Her play Anna opened at The Royal National Theatre in Spring 2019. Oil opened at The Almeida Theatre in October 2017 and her The Writer opened there in Spring 2018. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She is working on a film for BBC Films. While at MacDowell, she worked on a play called Swive, which opened at Shakespeare's Globe in the winter of 2019-2020. She completed a first draft in the three weeks she was in residence and says she could not have done it in any other environment

Having had my last play The Writer nominated for play of the year at The Evening Standard Awards – and shortlisted for The Susan Smith Blackburn Award – I'm excited to open this new work this winter.

Wood

Ella Hickson worked in the Wood studio.

Wood Studio, given to the residency program by Mrs. Frederick Trevor Hill, was completed in 1913 in memory of Mrs. Hill’s mother, Helen Ogden Wood. Like Schelling Studio, the building is sided with large, overlapping pieces of hemlock bark.
