Hamilton Nolan is a longtime journalist and writer on labor and politics, and a union activist. He has written for Gawker, In These Times, The Guardian, and elsewhere. His upcoming book about the American labor movement, The Hammer, will be published by Hachette Books in 2024.

At MacDowell, Nolan finished the final edits on The Hammer: Power, Inequality, and the Struggle for the Soul of Labor. He also wrote a number of shorter works of journalism while in residence.
