Jennifer Shyue is a translator from Spanish and an editor at Ugly Duckling Presse. She is interested in questions of diaspora and focuses particularly on work by Peruvian writers of Asian descent and contemporary Cuban writers. Her work has appeared in AGNI, The Common, The Margins, New England Review, and Words Without Borders, among other outlets, and has received support from the Cornell Institute for Comparative Modernities, English PEN, the Fulbright Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, Princeton University, and the University of Iowa. Her book-length translations include Julia Wong Kcomt’s poetry collections A Blind Salmon (Phoneme Media/Deep Vellum, 2024) and Vice-royal-ties (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2021), as well as Augusto Higa Oshiro’s novel The Enlightenment of Katzuo Nakamatsu (Archipelago Books, 2023), which received the ALTA First Translation Prize.
At MacDowell, Shyue worked on translations from Spanish to English of Okinawan Peruvian writer Augusto Higa Oshiro's complete short stories. She also began translating a 1988 interview of Higa Oshiro, as well as wrote essays about her translation process and her engagement with Higa Oshiro's body of work.
