João Tordo has published seventeen novels and two books of non-fiction, all with Penguin Random House. Occasionally, he also writes for TV and film, including two Netflix Originals. In 2009, he received the José Saramago Literary Prize. Since then, his novels have been published in several countries and languages, and he received the Fernando Namora Literary Prize in 2021. He has also been shortlisted for numerous awards, such as the Pen Club Literary Prize and the European Literary Award.

He’s received fellowships from MacDowell, Château de Lavigny, Conseil des Arts de Montreal, and Ledig House, among others. He also works as a writing teacher and has a side project of solo guitar work, MARIA GIBSON.

At MacDowell in 2018, Tordo worked on a new novel. In 2024, he worked his novel Os Dias Contados (Our Days Are Numbered), which is slated for a fall 2024 release. It is Tordo's twenty-first book.

Mansfield

João Tordo worked in the Mansfield studio.

The Helen Coolidge Mansfield Studio was donated by graduates of the Mansfield War Service Classes for Reconstruction Aides. Helen Mansfield helped found the New York MacDowell Club.
