Joseph James is the founder of Eponymous Practice, a studio for landscape architecture, outreach, and storytelling. He shapes the work of the practice through his interests and observations of the natural and cultural worlds and grounds each project in pragmatic, yet expressive solutions.
In addition to leading the practice, James teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design in the landscape architecture department, where he shares his love of grading with his students along with the fundamental connection between landform, soils, hydrology, and plants and their ability to shape human experience.
He is a leader in youth outreach to introduce a younger and more diverse audience to the profession of landscape architecture. He chairs the Boston Society of Landscape Architecture’s K-12 Committee, leading programs and events for youth with hands-on engagement exercises and pop-up parklets.
James is the recipient of the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Fellowship for Leadership and Innovation, where he launched his work to develop a graphic novel to introduce the profession to kids, as well as foster awareness and advocacy for quality greenspace and a more humane public realm. At MacDowell, he worked on writing and drawing this graphic novel project.
