Joe Kolman is a journalist, novelist and documentary filmmaker. His publications as a journalist range from The Chicago Reader (1979) to The Economist (2017). Naked Option, a novel about Wall Street, was published in 2007. Chicago Plantation, a documentary about the 1963 cold-case assassination of 24th Ward Alderman Ben Lewis, the first Black to be elected to the Chicago City Council, is in development. An Unorthodox Education, about the substandard secular education children receive in ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools, will be released in January 2023. He received a MacDowell Fellowship in 1983 to work on a novel about Chicago politics.

Joseph Kolman worked in the Phi Beta studio.

Funded by the Phi Beta Fraternity, a national professional fraternity of music and speech founded in 1912, Phi Beta Studio was built between 1929–1931 of granite quarried on the MacDowell grounds.
