João Tordo was born in Lisbon in 1975. He is a fiction writer. His 11 published novels have earned him, among others, the José Saramago Literary Prize in 2009 and many other nominations and shortlists. His books are published in several countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Argentina, etc. At MacDowell, he worked on a new novel to be published in March 2019 by Penguin Random House (Portugal).

Funded by Alpha Chi Omega, a national fraternity founded in 1885, Star Studio — built in 1911–1912 — was the first studio given to the residency by an outside organization.
