Judith Paine McBrien worked on a book about the writings of architect and urban planner Daniel Hudson Burnham (1846-1912). She directed the PBS film Make No Little Plans: Burnham and the American City, which broadcast nationally in 2010.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
