Kevin Umaña is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn. His paintings manage to feel uniquely both ancient and contemporary. The intersecting shapes and lines on his ceramic-and-painted canvases become sites of material collision. The hybrid works incorporate glazed ceramics into painted canvas compositions. Inspired by his upbringing in El Salvador, the pieces are imbued with visual references to fragmented memories. Playing with our inclination to seek recognizable forms within abstraction.

At MacDowell, Umaña worked on introducing new mediums to his oeuvre such as textiles and glass, and hopes to exhibit the new work during The Armory Show in New York City.

Kevin Umaña worked in the Heinz studio.

The icehouse, built of fieldstone in 1914–1915, was a practical part of Marian MacDowell’s plan for a self-sufficient farm. Winter ice cut from a nearby pond was stored here for summer use on the property. Idle since 1940, it was a handsome but outdated farm building. In 1995, Mrs. Drue…
