Kira Appelhans came to MacDowell at the end of a semester hiatus from the East Coast made possible by a visiting lecture position in the landscape architecture program at UT Austin. When living in New York, she works for the landscape architecture firm Balmori Associates and spends her free time in the printmaking studio.

The Graphics Studio, converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
