Laura Kolbe is a physician, writer, and medical ethicist. She has published poetry, fiction, personal essays, and criticism in publications including The New York Review of Books, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, Poetry, and the Yale Review. Her debut poetry collection, Little Pharma, won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize and will be published in the Pitt Poetry Series in October 2021.

While at MacDowell she worked on her hybrid memoir History and Physical, an account of medical training that draws from sources in the history of art, literature, and medicine to make sense of the rituals and beliefs implicit in the making of doctors.

Funded by Alpha Chi Omega, a national fraternity founded in 1885, Star Studio — built in 1911–1912 — was the first studio given to the residency by an outside organization.
