Michael Almereyda's films include Hamlet (2000), William Eggleston in the Real World (2005), Paradise (2009), Experimenter (2014), Marjorie Prime (2017), and Tesla (2020). His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Artforum, Film Comment, and booklets for the Criterion Collection. He has edited and contributed essays for books about Vladimir Mayakovsky, Manny Farber, and Garry Winogrand. He is working on a screenplay based on stories by Sam Shepard.

At MacDowell in 2009, Almereyda worked on a screenplay about experimental psychologist Stanley Milgram. In 2010, he completed a screenplay adaptation of Shakespeare's Cymbeline, and reviewed proofs for William Eggleston in the Real World. During his 2013 residency, he worked on preparations for Cymbeline which had recently been shot with a cast including Ed Harris, Ethan Hawke, John Leguizamo, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, Delroy Lindo, Penn Badgley, and Dakota Johnson.

Michael Almereyda worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.

Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
