Nawaaz Ahmed, a lapsed computer scientist transplant from Tamil Nadu, India, had just finished his M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, when he came to MacDowell. At the University of Michigan, he received Hopwood awards in short fiction, nonfiction, and for his work-in-progress novel. He worked on his first novel, Sings Like A Bird, about sisters, poetry, and Islam.

Van Zorn (formerly Kirby)

Nawaaz Ahmed worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.

Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
