Nicole Sealey used her time as a MacDowell Fellow to begin work on a series of poems about “Black Dolls" from the collection of Deborah Neff, which is comprised of handmade dolls created between 1850 and 1940 by African Americans for members of their own families, children they knew, as well as white children in their charge. Sealey’s debut poetry collection was published by Ecco in fall 2017.

Nicole Sealey worked in the Calderwood studio.

In the winter of 1998, motivated by his passion for reading, Stanford Calderwood donated funds for a new writers’ studio. Burr-McCallum Architects of Williamstown, MA, provided the award-winning design in 1999; and the construction of the handsome studio was completed in time for its first artist to arrive early in 2000.
