Documentary filmmaker Philip Cartelli’s films and videos have been exhibited at Locarno Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Visions du Réel, Torino Film Festival, FID Marseille, Microscope Gallery, and Film at Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real, among others.

Cartelli was awarded a NYSCA Individual Artist grant in 2023 and will be a visiting fellow at Iméra - Institut d’études avancées in Marseille (France) in 2024.

At MacDowell he worked on a new project, The Second Death, about the possibly apocryphal theft of Leon Trotsky’s ashes from their resting place in Mexico City and his attempts to make a documentary film about this event against the odds. He advanced in his pre-production work (research, revising a treatment/script, editing preliminary footage, and preparation for upcoming shoots). The project was previously presented at the New Visions Forum at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.

Wood

Philip Cartelli worked in the Wood studio.

Wood Studio, given to the residency program by Mrs. Frederick Trevor Hill, was completed in 1913 in memory of Mrs. Hill’s mother, Helen Ogden Wood. Like Schelling Studio, the building is sided with large, overlapping pieces of hemlock bark.
