Rick Karr is a reporter, writer, and documentarian based in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Purdue University and the London School of Economics. Karr has been reporting for NPR’s news magazines for more than 20 years and for various PBS shows for more than a decade.

Much of his work examines the intersection of technology, culture, and law. His PBS documentary Net @ Risk, which made the case that the United States is falling far behind other nations in the race to the wired future, was nominated for several awards.

He currently teaches at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is a member of the songwriters’ collective Box Set Authentic.

At MacDowell, he continued work on his critical history, TechnoPop: How Technology Makes and Un-makes Popular Music. His reporting on technology and popular culture can be heard regularly on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered."

Van Zorn (formerly Kirby)

Rick Karr worked in the Van Zorn (formerly Kirby) studio.

Constructed thanks to a bequest from Sarah L. Kirby, Kirby Studio was the last new building to be erected during Mrs. MacDowell’s leadership (1907-1951).
