Scott Wheeler’s four operas have been commissioned and performed by the Metropolitan Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, the Washington National Opera and the Guggenheim Foundation. CDs of his music can be heard on Naxos, BMOP Sound and Newport Classic. He has received awards from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, MacDowell, Yaddo, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Bogliasco Foundation and the Classical Recording Foundation. Wheeler teaches musical theatre at Emerson College in Boston.

During his most recent residency, he completed a song to be recorded by the Bowers-Fader Duo, worked on a chamber work for the ensemble Philosonia, and worked on a commission for Boston Opera Collaborative for a premiere in October 2018. He also composed a musical portrait of Kathleen Ludwig. Scott received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2018.

MacDowell

Scott Wheeler worked in the MacDowell studio.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
