Stanya Kahn is an interdisciplinary artist with a practice rooted mainly in film/video that also includes drawing, sculpture, sound, and performance. Her most recent film No Go Backs (2020) premiered in solo exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the ICA/LA and was an official selection at the London Film Festival and Rotterdam Film Festival, among others. At MacDowell she worked on paintings (oil on linen) featuring landscapes and the natural world in peril, completing four, with a fifth underway relating to No Go Backs. These will be included in her forthcoming solo exhibition at Vielmetter Los Angeles in 2022.

Recent solo exhibitions include shows at MoMA/PS1, New Museum/NY, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Marlborough Chelsea/NY, Weiss Berlin. Recent group exhibitions include shows at the Walker Art Center, Weslyan Art Gallery, CAM/St. Louis, the Gwanju Biennial (2018), Hammer Museum, New Museum, among others. Her writings and drawings appear in multiple publications including Die Laughing (2nd Cannons), Moving Image (MIT Press), It's Cool, I'm Good (Cornerhouse), and Abstract Video (UC Press.)

Stanya Kahn worked in the Cheney studio.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
