Taran N Khan is a journalist and non-fiction writer based in Mumbai. Her first book – worked on at MacDowell in 2014 – is Shadow City: A Woman Walks Kabul, and was published by Chatto& Windus (UK) and Penguin Random House (India). In 2020 it won the Tata Literature Live! First Book Award for non fiction, and in 2021 won the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year prize. Taran's works have appeared in publications including Guernica, Al Jazeera, the Caravan, and Himal Southasian. Her work has received support from MacDowell, the Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature, and the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, among others.
