Introduction to Step: A Dance Workshop with Jakari Sherman

March 18, 2025

On March 18, 2025, over 50 students and audience members participated in an engaging and movement-based dance workshop led by first-time interdisciplinary Fellow Jakari Sherman at the Monadnock Academy of Movement Arts in downtown Peterborough, NH. Sherman began by speaking towards the history of step and his own unique professional career before teaching specific verbal and physical elements of the form such as how percussive clapping, foot stomping, and call-and-response interact within the movement. The class culminated in participants learning and performing a choreographed step routine.

With over 20 years of experience and a deep-rooted passion for the African American tradition of stepping, Sherman blends percussive movement with storytelling, technology, and diverse musical influences. Formerly the artistic director of Step Afrika!, he has led groundbreaking productions such as Drumfolk and Symphony in Step.

Thank you to those who joined us for this unique opportunity to learn from a visionary artist and explore the power of rhythm and movement!
