The House of the Solitary - Frank WANG Yefeng's solo exhibition at Smack Mellon

Fellows Event

Frank WANG Yefeng, The House of the Solitary

December 2, 2023 - January 28, 2024

Originally created in the summer of 2020, Frank WANG Yefeng has reimagined this series of video animations as an uncanny domestic installation for this exhibition. Sparked by the artist’s unexpected and prolonged lockdown experience in Berlin, Yefeng combines poems, 3D rendering, texts sculpted in VR, and distorted soundtracks of airline on-hold music to quietly remark on the mental paradigm shifts caused by the global isolation of the 2020 pandemic. Non-human everyday objects have transformed into characters that repeatedly inflate and deflate via computer dynamic simulations, marking the pervasive and mundane anxieties experienced during this extended pause in time. The House of the Solitary captures the ways that lived-reality seemed to pull apart from itself, splitting known categories into fragments of “in-betweenness”. Exhibition curated by Rachel Vera Steinberg, Curator & Director of Exhibitions, Smack Mellon.
