Fellowships & Stipends

Fellowships

Fellowship gifts have a significant impact on the lives and careers of artists by fully funding their residencies at MacDowell. They also enable MacDowell to provide 300 residencies a year at no cost to artists. Each Fellowship covers the cost of a single residency for a period of up to two months, including the use of a private studio at MacDowell, meals, accommodations, and the benefits of a dynamic community of artists working in many disciplines. Major gifts designated for Fellowships are essential to preserving MacDowell’s tradition of accepting artists solely on the basis of talent.

  • Permanently Endowed Fellowship with Stipend $400,000 — A donation at this level will permanently endow a Fellowship for one artist per year in your name, along with an annual stipend. Each year, you will receive a letter with information about the artist whom your endowment gift supported; the artist will be notified; and information about your Fellowship support will be listed on our Sponsored Fellowships & Gifts pages.
  • Permanently Endowed Fellowship $350,000 — A donation at this level will permanently endow a Fellowship for one artist per year in your organization’s name. Each year, you will receive a letter with information about the artist whom your endowment gift supported; the artist will be notified; and information about your Fellowship support will be listed on our Sponsored Fellowships & Gifts pages.
  • Named Fellowship $25,000 — A donation at this level will name a Fellowship for one artist for one year in your organization’s name. You will receive a letter with information about the artist whom your endowment gift supported; the artist will be notified; and information about your Fellowship support will be listed on our Sponsored Fellowships & Gifts pages.

Both annual and endowed Fellowships carry naming opportunities and may also be designated to support a specific discipline, as agreed upon by the donor and MacDowell. Donors receive reports each year about the recipients of their Fellowships, and opportunities often arise for personal correspondence with the artists.

Stipends

Need-based assistance, in addition to Fellowship support, helps eliminate financial barriers to accepting a MacDowell residency and opens the residency experience to a wider and more diverse community of artists. Stipends — which are designed to replace lost income and defray travel, rent, and other continuing expenses — give artists-in-residence the peace of mind to work experimentally and productively while at MacDowell. Gifts designated for stipend support, which currently provide direct financial assistance of up to $2,500 per artist based on demonstrated financial need, may be designated for artists working in a specific discipline. In addition, an endowed stipend fund may be established, the income of which will generate funds for stipend support in perpetuity. These gifts also provide naming opportunities and recognition for their donors on our Sponsored Fellowships & Gifts pages.
