MacDowell, the nation’s first artist residency program, has awarded 130 Fellowships to visionary artists working across seven disciplines, representing 15 states as well as 11 countries, for its Fall 2026 Winter 2027 season. These distinguished artists will arrive at MacDowell’s historic campus in Peterborough, New Hampshire between September 2026 and February 2027, each with an average stay of four weeks. Selected from a highly competitive pool of 2009 applicants, with an acceptance rate of 6 percent, artists are awarded Fellowships solely based on the artistic excellence of their work, as evaluated by independent panels of discipline specific experts.
“We are delighted to welcome Ritesh Batra and the Lazours (Daniel and Patrick Lazour) to MacDowell as our first collective group in residence,” says Courtney Bethel, MacDowell’s Admissions Director. “While MacDowell has a long-standing tradition of supporting artists working collaboratively, we expanded our support for collaborative artmaking for the Fall 2026 Winter 2027 season by creating a designated application process for established collectives. We are excited to think about ways in which MacDowell may expand in response to the needs of artists working today.”
Established artist collectives, or groups of 3-12 people working on a joint project, may now submit under one application for residencies that will take place over two weeks, with shared studio spaces tailored to the needs of each project. Submissions in this category are limited to 10 applications each season, and once that number has been reached, submissions for the season close.
MacDowell’s Executive Director Chiwoniso Kaitano shares, “Recognizing and supporting the many ways artists create together is essential to our mission. Artists who work collectively are deserving of the same environment MacDowell offers individual artists—space, time, nourishment, and an inspiring natural landscape.”
Twice each year, MacDowell convenes esteemed panels of professionals— recognized leaders in their respective fields— who assess applications anonymously. Selection is based on the merit of submitted work samples and project proposals, allowing the creative voice and vision of applicants to speak for themselves.
During their time at MacDowell, Fellows are granted the gift of uninterrupted focus, supported by a private studio, comfortable accommodations, and three thoughtfully prepared meals each day. Residencies may last up to eight weeks.
The next application deadline is February 10, 2027 for the Fall 2027 Winter 2028 residency season. The application will open in mid-January.
