James Baldwin Fellowship
Established in 2019
James Baldwin held three residencies at MacDowell in 1954, 1958, and 1960. These fellowships honor his influence on the American consciousness through his writings on racial justice and social inequality by providing artists today—of any discipline—time and space to create work that celebrates and furthers Baldwin’s legacy as an activist and artist.
Current and past supporters of these fellowships include the Hearst Foundations, Amazon Literary Parnership, Bank of America, Agnes Gund, and Musa and Tom Mayer.
