Abigail Anne Newbold came to MacDowell after having installed her most encompassing solo exhibition to date in Portland, OR: "Living Through Making." Through a combination of a physical exhibition and her leadership on a retreat entitled the Academy for Survival, Newbold explored how making and skill based knowledge forms the crux of modern survival, providing modes of economic and social independence. She has received recognition in the fields of fine art, design, and craft, preferring to maintain professional diversity. She is a recipient of a Kresge Artist Fellowship and an Artist Award from the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts.

Originally a working barn perched atop the namesake hill of Hillcrest Farm, this building was converted to serve the arts in 1956.
