Avtar Singh is an internationally published author and editor. He was granted a Fellowship by the MacDowell in the US in 2018, where he worked on his third novel in the MacDowell Studio.

His last novel, Necropolis, about crime, poetry and a woman who may be centuries-old, was published by HarperCollins India/Akashic Press U.S., and was translated into German. His previous novel, The Beauty of These Present Things, was published by Penguin India.

Among others, his writing has been collected in the short story anthology Mumbai Noir and the essay collection Pilgrim’s India.

He has worked as an editor with Man’s World and the Outlook Group in India. He was founding editor of Time Out Delhi, and was most recently managing editor of The Indian Quarterly.

He has written for GQ, Cosmopolitan, and other publications.

He lives and reports from Beijing.

MacDowell

Avtar Singh worked in the MacDowell studio.

Built in 1912, Pine Studio was renamed MacDowell Studio in 1943 in recognition of support from a group of Edward MacDowell’s music students. It was built as a composers’ studio and the stuccoed walls were intended to be soundproof.
