Eugene Gloria worked on new poems for his fifth collection of poems, This Charming Man (a working title), during his latest residency. In his new works, Gloria continues to explore issues of identity, dislocation, and alienation. This Charming Man examines the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, scientist, poet, and novelist, whose writings inspired the Philippine revolution from Spanish colonization in the nineteenth century. His latest collection, Sightseer in this Killing City (Penguin Random House, 2019), was awarded the Indiana Authors Award for Poetry in 2020.
