Heiko Kalmbach is a filmmaker, video artist, and stage director. He pursued drama and cultural studies in Bremen and Berlin before completing a film degree at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1998. His films as well as his work for the stage as a director and video designer have screened at renowned Festivals worldwide. He also collaborated with composer Katharina Rosenberger on the interactive sound and video installation Viva Voce. He is co-founder of the Berlin based production company Spoonfilm and the New York/Berlin performance group Naturaleza Humana.

He has been teaching in his fields of practice since the late 1990s at Technical University’s M.A. Program and has been a tutor for film and dramaturgy at the Architectural Association’s Interprofessional Studio (MA/MFA in Spatial Performance and Design) in London since 2009. Kalmbach’s individual grants and residencies include an Artist's Fellowship for Film from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a Martin Scorsese Award, Russell Hexter Filmmaker's Award, Nestor Almendros Award, Artist Residencies at Camargo Foundation in France, MacDowell Fellowship in New Hampshire, and more.
