Helen Breger (1918-2013) was a widely exhibited Bay Area artist and teacher whose fashion illustrations appeared in The Chronicle in the 1950s and whose work lives in many private and museum collections. Before her retirement, she had a long and distinguished teaching career at California College of Arts and Crafts as well as the University of California at Berkeley. Born in Vienna, she was educated at the Arts Students League in New York, The San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, and California College of Arts and Crafts (M.F.A.). She was a fellow at MacDowell in and in later years studied bronze casting in Italy. Her main concentration was in the field of drawing, graphics, fine art prints, and various aspects of design. While studying at the Art Students League in New York, she freelanced as an illustrator.
