Helen Thorpe has written for many magazines including 5280, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. Her first book, Just Like Us, was published by Scribner in the fall of 2009. She completed her second book, due out in 2014, during a residency at MacDowell.

Erected in memory of Sarah L. Kirby, who had left a bequest to MacDowell, this studio was the first — and remains the only — brick building on the grounds.
