Judy Gelles (1944-2020) received her M.F.A. in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work is in collections throughout the US and around the world, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia; Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, Newport Art Museum in Newport, Rhode Island; Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio; and the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Art in Brazil. She has had residencies at MacDowell, the Visual Studies Workshop and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Awards include Critical Mass Top 50 Photographers, a William Penn Foundation Grant, a Fleisher Challenge Artist Award, a Mid-Atlantic Arts Artist Catalyst Grant, Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize and Curators Choice Award Center Santa Fe.

Judy Gelles worked in the Nef studio.

Nef Studio, the first entirely new studio built after 1937, was donated by esteemed photographer, explorer, author, and MacDowell Fellow Evelyn Steffanson Nef in 1992. Endowed funds for the studio’s maintenance in perpetuity and an annual Fellowship for photographers were given in addition to funds for construction.
