Mary Potter Engel holds a Ph.D. in Christian theology from the University of Chicago and was for many years a tenured professor of theology. She recently received her M.F.A. in creative writing and lives in Washington with her family. She is the author of Strangers and Sojourners: Stories from the Lowcountry.

At MacDowell, Mary continued work of drafting her second novel, LOSING THE WAY, and completed an essay on Alzheimer's and the human condition. Her book of linked Southern stories, STRANGERS and SOJOURNERS, had just been released by counterpoint.

Originally built near MacDowell's Union Street entrance, the Barnard Studio — which was funded by Barnard College music students — was re-located to its current site in 1910.
