Peter McCaffrey was born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at the State Universities of New York at Buffalo and Farmingdale, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1979.

He has received residency grants from the Millay Colony in upstate NY, the MacDowell Colony for the Arts in New Hampshire, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Weir Farm Historic Trust in Connecticut. The Tyrone Guthrie Center and the Ballinglen Arts Foundation have also granted Peter residencies to work in his native country of Ireland.

From 1992 through 2004 he was represented by the Paesaggio Gallery and currently exhibits at LaMotta Fine Arts in West Hartford, Conn. His works are in private collections here and abroad. He is a resident of New York City for 30 years, and is currently working on establishing a studio at his residence in Rensselaerville near Albany, New York.
