Rudolf Wachter (1923-2001)

Rudolf Wachter, born in Bernried on Lake Constance in 1923, made a significant contribution to the renewal of wood carving in Germany. After training as a carpenter in his parents' business, he attended the wood carving school in Oberammergau from 1946 to 1949 and the sculpture class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1949 to 1955.

His work has received awards throughout Germany. Wachter is a member of the German Association of Artists, the Neue Gruppe München, an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His sculptures stand for a higher logic, as Rudolf Wachter himself states, and despite their concrete form, they are to be understood as more than just rationally oriented.
