Samuel Nigro works in granite, endurance-based performance, and speculative writing as a single, evolving act. During his MacDowell Fellowship in 2003, he developed a new series of essays and time-based works that became a pivotal step in his practice. The time, space, and community at MacDowell helped shape the direction of his work, contributing to the trajectory that led to his being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.

Heinz

Samuel Nigro worked in the Heinz studio.

The icehouse, built of fieldstone in 1914–1915, was a practical part of Marian MacDowell’s plan for a self-sufficient farm.
