How Many Crows Does It Take to Make a Murder?
After Duriel E. Harris’ He Who Fights With Monsters
for Kerry James Marshall and Raymond Patterson
How many black birds along a tree?
How many blacks on a tree?
How many on a tree?
How many backs to a tree?
How many backs like a tree?
How many blackened trees?
How much coal? How many caws on the tree’s top?
How many cauls along branches?
(How many trees?)
How many leaves?
How do the blacks leave?
How many flee?
How many hearts up a sleeve? How many black black strings across?
So so many. So so so many, many.
