W. David Hancock is an American playwright. His play The Convention of Cartography was performed in 1994 by The Foundry Theatre at a gallery in Chelsea. His play The Race of the Ark Tattoo played at PS122 and the Cherry Lane Theater, and toured regionally. He has received many awards including; 1995 Obie Award, 1998 Whiting Award, 1999 Obie Award, 2000 CalArts/Alpert Award for theatre, 2000 Creative Capital Performing Arts Award, and the 2001 Bush Artist Fellowship.

W. David Hancock worked in the Sprague-Smith studio.

In January of 1976, the original Sprague-Smith Studio — built in 1915–1916 and funded by music students of Mrs. Charles Sprague-Smith of the Veltin School — was destroyed by fire. Redesigned by William Gnade, Sr., a Peterborough builder, the fieldstone structure was rebuilt the same year from the foundation up, reusing the original fieldstone. A few…
