Alex Mar is the author of the nonfiction books Witches of America, which was a New York Times Notable Book and is being developed for television, and Seventy Times Seven, which was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and one of New York Magazine’s Best Books of 2023. Her longform journalism, reviews, and essays have appeared in New York Magazine, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Book Review, and The Guardian, as well as The Best American Magazine Writing. She has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award in Feature Writing, and she is also the director of the feature-length documentary American Mystic. Love in the Time of Robots, her recent cover story for Wired magazine, has been optioned for film adaptation.

At MacDowell in 2012, Mar completed a section of Witches in America. She also began research for essays for The New York Times Book Review, The Believer, and The Oxford American. In 2017, she drafted two new chapters of Seventy Times Seven. During her 2025 residency, Mar completed five chapters of her debut novel, to be published in early 2027 by Hachette. She also completed and published The Cure, a major work of longform journalism for Wired magazine.
