Alwar Bala (Balasubramaniam) is a sculptor, painter, printmaker, and installation artist based in Bangalore, India. Bala received a bachelor’s degree from the Government College of Arts, Chennai, and went on to study printmaking at the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop, and the Universität fur angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Austria. His work has been exhibited worldwide in museums, festivals and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Mori Art Museum in Japan, the Essl Museum in Austria, the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia, and at the 1st Singapore Biennale.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
