Barbara Apel attended the Kansas City Art Institute of Missouri, where she received a B.F.A. in 1965. Two years later, after graduate study with printmaker Lee Chesney at University of Illinois, Urbana, Apel received a M.F.A. Winner of many prizes for her prints, Apel taught from 1967 to 1981 at various institutions, including the Art Institute of Boston, the DeCordova & Dana Museum, Lincoln, and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education – all in Massachusetts.

Barbara Apel worked in the Putnam studio.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
