Brian Payton is the author of The Wind is Not a River (worked on at MacDowell), an American Booksellers Association IndieNext Great Reads Pick, American Library Association “Library Reads” Pick, Amazon Book of the Month, Amazon Canada Best Fiction of the Year, and a Seattle Times and BookPage Best Book of the Year.

Payton is also the author of the novel Hail Mary Corner and two acclaimed works of narrative nonfiction: Shadow of the Bear, a Barnes and Noble Book Club Pick and U.S. National Outdoor Book Awards Book of the Year; and The Ice Passage, a finalist for the Hubert Evans Nonfiction Prize.

Payton’s articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Smithsonian, The Atlantic, and Hakai Magazine. He lives with his family on Vancouver Island.

Mansfield

Brian Payton worked in the Mansfield studio.

The Helen Coolidge Mansfield Studio was donated by graduates of the Mansfield War Service Classes for Reconstruction Aides. Helen Mansfield helped found the New York MacDowell Club. The small, shingled frame structure with stone foundation was originally fronted on the west side by a neat white picket fence and gate, a garden, and a stone pathway…
