Cynthia Back is a printmaker and painter. Back received her bachelor’s at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and continued on to complete graduate and post graduate degrees at Wimbledon School of Art and St. Martin’s School of Art in London, UK. She has had solo exhibitions at a variety of galleries, including the Washington Printermakers Gallery, Washington, D.C. in 2016; and the Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia, PA in 2015. Back is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and fellowships from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, The Dundacion Valparaiso, the Hellene Wirlitzer Foundation and many others. Back’s work resides in a variety of collections, including The Library of Congress, The New York Public Library, The Free Library of Philadelphia, and the New York Historical Society.

Cynthia Back worked in the Adams studio.

Given to the MacDowell Association by Margaret Adams of Chicago, the half-timbered, stuccoed Adams Studio was designed by MacDowell Fellow and architect F. Tolles Chamberlin ca. 1914.
