Deborah Whitman (1953-2016) was an American artist who received her B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1975, her M.F.A. from Rutgers University in 1978, and finally an M.A. in art psychotherapy from Rutgers University in 2004. She was the recipient of fellowships and grants from MacDowell, Yaddo, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
