Hardwick Nevin (1897-1965) was a playwright and poet. Two of Nevin’s plays were Broadway hits in the 1930s — Whatever Possessed Her and Young Alexander. He had earlier been a Broadway actor.

Cheney Studio was given to MacDowell by Mrs. Benjamin P. Cheney and Mrs. Karl Kauffman. Like Barnard Studio, Cheney is a low, broadly massed bungalow. Sited on a steep westward slope, its porches are supported on wooden posts and fieldstone with lattices.
